Welcome back to 5 Ways to Slay Boredom During a Zombie Apocalypse. I published this a little later than yesterday's post, because—no zombie apocalypse puns intended—I had to make an unexpected store run...was low on food supplies. Nevertheless, I bring you part 2 of this blog series. In this section, I'll focus on one of my favorite and most enjoyable aspects of this list: books!
Yes, I know, I know...a lot of people have grown to loath books; either due to having to read them in school for a grade, having to read them for work, or just because they can never find ones they love enough to finish, all the way to the end. But fear not my trepid readers...like Rick Grimes did in Season 9, Episode 3 of The Walking Dead (sorry...nerd moment 🤓), I'm about to rustle up some great books for you to check out. Just call me Papa Rick, cuz' I got your back!
2. Read a Book...ish (via Books):
Whether it be in the form of a hardcover,
audio book, or other digital forms such as articles or Webtoons, there are plenty of ways to catch up on (or finish)
some great written content. Below are categories of different kinds of books or digital readings, that you can enjoy—whether you prefer readings that will take you about a minute to finish (e.g. Webtoon Series) or ones that are lengthier, which you can read in longer sittings.
-Hardcopy Books (author names 1st)
Angie Thomas: while I would like to say that my love for this author has nothing to do with her being from my home state...I honestly can't. But, hear me out when I say that everything she writes is straight fire🔥—her being a best seller, having a mass fan following, and famous authors who have been in the game for years show her love, are all attestations to her writing skills. Her books are relevant to times like these not only because they focus on serious issues, but more importantly, they have encouraging messages on how positivity can come out of trying situations. Lastly, these books are filled with comedic jewels: The Hate U Give ; On The Come Up
Nic Stone: while Nic also touches on serious issues in her books, they are also filled with comedic jewels, but trust me when I say that her writing style is different from that of Angie's. For example, I am currently reading Nic's book JackPot, which is a rollercoaster story including lottery, laughs, and even love. Be sure to check it out, along with some of her others: Jackpot; Clean GetawayTomi Adeyemi: Alright, soooo...If you're like me, you know Avatar the Last Airbender was, is, and always will be a fire show. With that in mind, know that Adeyemi's books put you in that mind set, but on a whole notha' level!!! Action, magic, royal families, sparring, and more can be found in her book series: Children of Blood and Bone; Children of Virtue and Vengeance
-Audio Books—If you don't prefer hard copies, audiobooks are for you. Just about all of the books aforementioned can be purchased as audiobooks. Also, there are several free audiobooks that authors list on their Youtube pages or apps like Amazon Kindle; all it takes is a quick search of your desired book to see what's available. Here are a few audiobooks I've highly enjoyed: Artemis Fowl; Harry Potter; The Red Necklace (make sure it is the Tom Hiddleston narrated one, his voice is superb!). -Webtoons:
If short reads (and I mean really short, depending
on the work), are more your thing, Webtoons are definitely for you! My cousin introduced me to the Webtoons app, which is a collection of mini comic book, graphic novel sort of reads. The app has multiple stories with interesting plots, each paired with vivid images too bring those stories to life. Here are my current reads on the app (below). My favorite series of the three right now is The Wrath & the Dawn, which is kind of a re-telling of the Middle Eastern tales, One Thousand & One Nights. Scheherazade is the protagonist in this story as well, however, this version has an interesting plot twist: The Wrath & the Dawn; Lore Olympus; Assassin Roommate
